MPLUSPLUS「Embodiment++」[CCBT]

MPLUSPLUS hosted the “Embodiment++” exhibition at the Civic Creative Base Tokyo [CCBT].

Minoru Fujimoto, the representative of MPLUSPLUS, has utilized his experience as a dancer and his research in wearable computing to explore “updating the human body” through stage performances and other means.
The exhibition featured new works, including installations by robots that challenge our traditional notions of physicality. These robots and technology posed the question: can we understand and transcend our physical limits? The installations aimed to represent a new form of “physicality” shaped by technology, highlighting the emerging intelligence that extends human capabilities through AI.

Three performance/installation pieces without human presence were showcased:

“Unknown RhythmsーHumanized Clock”（new work）
“Morphing Elegance ーRobotic Choreographer”（revised from its original 2018 version）
“Vitality of LightーLight-emitting Existence”（new work）

Additionally, the program displayed about ten original products developed by MPLUSPLUS since its inception in 2013. These interactive exhibits allowed visitors to engage directly with technology, such as images drawn on tablets or outlines of their bodies displayed on products. Periodically, a unique control system activated, synchronizing all the products in the venue with the music for a unified performance.

Furthermore, throughout the exhibition period, there were talks and workshops where researchers and artists came together to discuss the theme of “body augmentation through technology”.

MPLUSPLUS代表の藤本実はダンサーである自身の経験とウェアラブルコンピューティングの研究をベースに「人間の身体をアップデートする」ことを、ステージパフォーマンスの演出等を通じて行なってきました。
本展示で新たに発表した作品は、藤本がこのためのひとつの手立てとして取り組む、人間を超えるロボットによるインスタレーション。ロボット、テクノロジーによる「身体性」を私たちは受け止め、かつ超えることができるのかをテーマに、AIをはじめとする人間を拡張しゆく知性が顕在化する現在に、テクノロジー化する新たな「身体性」を提示する３つの人間不在のパフォーマンス / インスタレーション作品を展示しました。

また、本プログラムでは、2013年の設立以来、MPLUSPLUSが10年間にわたって開発・発表してきたオリジナルのプロダクト約10種類を展示しました。タブレットに書いた絵や、自分の体の輪郭がプロダクトに表示されるなど、実際に来場者がインタラクティブに体験できるほか、一定時間毎には独自の制御システムが稼働、会場内の全プロダクトと音楽とが連動するパフォーマンスが展開されました。

また、会期中には、「テクノロジーによる身体の拡張」を、研究者やアーティストとともに考えるトークやワークショップも開催しました。
